No fan of Russell Brand

with 5 comments

I am not a fan of Russell Brand, either as a comedian, actor or political commentator/activist.

I just watched a clip of him attacking Nigel Farage on BBC Question Time and have to say his comment “I’ve got money now, I’ve seen rich people, there’s plenty of money out there, It’s just not being distributed.” is something I have been saying, in one form or another for many years, even before Russell was born(!) because it is, in a capitalist system an eternal truth.

He went up a notch or two in my estimation.

I do, however find his reference to Farage as a ‘pound shop Enoch Powell’ somewhat distasteful. I was born and bred in Brum, a lifelong socialist and certainly no racist, and can tell you get away from such sound bites, study the man and you will find Enoch Powell was no racist and no ranting megalomaniacal Farage.

Far from it; he served for many years after the war in India, loved Indian culture and represented Wolverhampton, a constituency with a large immigrant population from 1950 to 1974.

He was a classical scholar and refused army promotions to serve in the countries he loved.

His great demise was his so called ’rivers of blood ‘speech which was taken greatly out of context and often quoted as evidence of his racism. Read the speech in full, as I have and I think you will come to similar a similar conclusion.

Anybody who knows me will know I am no racist and certainly no Tory! But when a truth is distorted, it should be shown to be so; when a man’s character is destroyed by a twisted media, it should be highlighted as so.

His politics apart, Enoch Powell was a great and highly educated man and probably one of the few politicians, modern or old school who was honest.

I am in total agreement with the post, Enoch Powell was a great man and saw things beyond his time – that is what made him so great, that and his honesty. As usual, the “media” of the day where just like the vultures we have now, and ripped him apart!

  4. I agree with you over Powell. It is always important to emphasise the truth. I regret being misinformed when I demonstrated against him and yelled racist during his speeches.
As for Brand – the fool’s idea of an intelligent man – I despair. His derogatory comment about the Pound shop was ill conceived by whoever wrote his quote cards for him. I was in the Pound shop yesterday and was moved by the mums buying their kids Christmas presents at low prices. Bet Brand does not shop there.

  5. I would like to add an anecdote about Powell During the 1970s he and I participated in a northern radio show to discuss foetal tissue transplantation and research. He had a good grasp of ethics, and there was no significant disagreement. I maintained then, as I do now, that voluntary abortion is unethical, but drew attention to the problem of who gives consent for aborted tissue to be used for experiments. If the mother has chosen to terminate the life of the baby she is carrying, should she have the right to decide whether or not its remains should be used for scientific purposes? Big question. Powell was up for that type of discussion. Try to discuss this topic with the chanting mobs that support choice today.
