A fair days pay for a fair days work.

Once, as a trade union representative discussing a wage claim with an employer’s representative, I was told that there was already a significant proportion of the workforce who were regularly absent on Fridays; if we pay considerably more, they will be able to afford to be absent on Mondays too.

I argued that on low wages, losing a day was of little consequence monetarily; if they were losing a greater sum by their absence, they may be more inclined not to be absent on a Friday.
