When the Tories say they are the party of ‘aspiration’ – do they mean as in a sigh?

No, I do think they mean ‘aspiration’ in the sense we would most commonly interpret it; “a desire, longing or ambition.”

What they fail to tell us is that, unless you wear the old school tie, are entrepreneurial to the tune of millions on the backs of the poor, or are of aristocratic ancestry then there is a glass ceiling, above which all you shit-shoveller’s may not aspire, above which you may not climb.

I prefer a glass floor, below which no man, woman or child should fall.

Pride's Purge

Tory MP Robert Halfon said in a speech at the Conservative Home conference today that the Tory Party should be the party of ‘aspiration‘.

I think I might agree with him.

Because according to my dictionary, aspiration can be three things:

  • a desire, longing or ambition.
  • an audible puff of breath such as a sigh.
  • the act of removing fluid from the body via suction.

So my only question is – which definition of ‘aspiration‘ was Halfon referring to?

What do you think?
