Plebgate- Who Lies (Hardest) Wins.

with 6 comments

I do believe that Andrew Mitchell said what the officer he directed his comments at said he had.

I believe that when further supporting evidence was forthcoming from other officers who claimed to have witnessed the event he resigned his ministerial position in the face of overwhelming evidence.

I believe that the police did what they do- closed ranks and backed each other up.

I believe that further evidence and the ensuing investigation proved some officers lied.

I believe that Mr Mitchell saw an opportunity and took advantage of this.

Otherwise, why didn’t he fight it from the start; why did he resign?

Just because some officers lied in support of their colleague doesn’t mean the whole tale is made up.

Of course, what I believe doesn’t amount to much. But I believe it.

  3. Before I retired, I worked for the department in the Met Police responsible of this area of policing, and I actually know the officers concerned personally. What really happened, is actually a lot like this.
Mitchell said what he said. We all know he did, because he apologised, then resigned. A man like Mitchell would NEVER have done this, had he not known it was the truth.
The officers did not coddle up a story and close ranks.A rather silly off-duty officer pretended to have heard it, and sent an e mail as a ‘concerned member of the public’. This was later unmasked as a stupid lie, and he was dismissed.
The officers from another force, brought in to investigate, later made things up, and had to eventually admit that. They were not Met Police officers.
The officers on duty at the time of the incident, are now being thrown onto the sacrificial pyre, to avoid facing the fact that some others did lie after the event. Mitchell has grasped onto this, and is once again denying he ever said it.
What a complete mess. The worst thing is, he will probably end up with an apology, and two decent coppers, otherwise uninvolved, will forfeit their careers.
    Regards, Pete.
