The NHS; The Rot Has Begun

leave a comment »

“The rot has started; the first hospital to be run by a private company has been announced.

Hinchingbrooke hospital in Cambridgeshire will be run by private sector company Circle.

They will hold onto the first £2,000,000 of any annual surplus it generates; that is TWO MILLION POUNDS; £2,000,000 that could be put back into care of patients or new equipment. How will it generate this surplus? Well it won’t ‘generate’ anything; the only way is to take the government (or taxpayers) money, and spend less of it so there is some left over. This must, therefore equate to poorer patient care, less investment and probably not taking on the more expensive treatments.

Further, how is this a National Health Service when individual hospitals are treated differently from other hospitals? Surely the NHS (the clue is in the name- National) should be run nationally, with money being funnelled to where it is needed?

But the crux is simply that such a public service cannot and should not be expected to generate surpluses; simply because every pound saved is a pound not spent on patients. The reason for this privatisation is to save the tax bill for running an NHS so that rich individuals and organisations can be made richer by tax cuts. Nothing and nobody will dissuade me from this opinion.”
